"Respect, as simple as hello!"
On the National Day dedicated to respect on public transport, all stakeholders in public transport in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg remind that mutual respect is an essential part of travelling together in shared transport spaces such as buses, trains and trams.
Travelling well together: respect begins with consideration
Public transport is a shared space, used daily by people with diverse personalities, expectations and sensitivities.
In this context, certain everyday behaviours, although often unintentional, can cause discomfort for other passengers.
This is particularly the case with private telephone conversations, playing music at high volume, or sharing personal information in spaces where confidentiality cannot be guaranteed but is expected.
Whether on a bus, tram or train, these situations are experienced by all passengers present, with no way of avoiding them, and are perceived as a genuine disturbance to their peace and quiet.
Adopting a respectful attitude therefore involves:
• exercising discretion during private conversations,
• using headphones and ensuring an appropriate volume,
• bearing in mind that public transport is not a private space.
Through simple gestures of mutual respect, everyone can contribute to a respectful coexistence that enhances the quality of journeys and collective well-being.
Under the patronage of Yuriko Backes, Minister for Mobility and Public Works, this initiative forms part of the national campaign ‘Respect as simple as hello’, launched in 2023. As in previous years, the initiative is being run in collaboration with the Public Transport Authority, the City of Luxembourg, Luxtram, CFL and TICE. It is accompanied by an awareness-raising and communication campaign rolled out across public transport, on the social media channels of the partners involved, and in public spaces.
“Showing consideration does not mean keeping quiet, but adapting one’s behaviour to a shared space, which is not private. Keeping one’s voice down, using headphones or postponing private conversations are simple gestures that contribute to a peaceful atmosphere and make it easier for us all to live together. Discretion is often the first step towards mutual respect: it allows everyone to travel peacefully, in a shared environment where respectful consideration for others makes all the difference", Yuriko Backes was keen to point out.
Respect, as simple as hello: a key message reminding us that consideration for others lies at the heart of shared, harmonious and considerate mobility.
